Kingyo Goldfish Pop Art Print

from $30.00

Kingyo (きんぎょ・金魚), Japanese for goldfish, is one of the most recognisable summer symbols in Japan, and is the star of the Kingyo Sukui (金魚すくい or 金魚掬い), an over 100 year old traditional goldfish scooping game that is often the feature event at the popular summer festivals throughout Japan.

Kingyo’s kanji characters of 金 (kin) for ‘gold’ and 魚 (gyo) for ‘fish’, originating from Chinese, give goldfish an auspicious significance. The character for ‘fish’ (魚) in Chinese is a homophone to 余 (yú), meaning ‘surplus’ or ‘in excess of’. This embodies kingyo as a symbol of inviting abundance of wealth and prosperity into your home.

The red and the shimmering golden colours of the goldfish, alongside the calming water blues and bright pond greens are synonymous with the ‘summer colours’ or 夏色 (natsu iro) in Japan. Our Kingyo print, as a part of our Japanese summer print collection, celebrates this marvellous, beautiful, and auspicious creature as the iconic symbol of the traditional Japanese warm, sunny, tranquil summer days.
